Summary
"James "Maggie" Megellas is the most decorated officer in the history of the famed 82nd Airborne Division. He earned that distinction in World War II. From the brutal fighting in Anzio, Italy to the suicidal crossing of the Waal River in small wood and canvas boats in Holland, "Maggie" Megellas led H-Company of the 504th parachute Infantry Regiment through some of the most horrific battles the war had to offer. Later, he went on to fight heroically in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate a Nazi concentration camp, then on to Berlin. Maggie's War is the true story of a young man who was trained by his country to do just one thing in World War II--kill Germans before they killed him. But this is also a story about leadership. How "Maggie" Megellas evolved from a young man from pastoral Fond du Lac, Wisconsin into one of WWII's most effective and decorated platoon leaders. He was James Megellas prior to his first taste of combat in the maintains of Italy in 1943. After the brutal fight there and in Anzio, his troops came to know him as "Maggie," a fearless leader who cared deeply about the men he led. The Germans also had a name for "Maggie" Megellas and his fellow 504th paratroopers: "The devils in baggy pants." The reputation was well-earned. Maggie's War chronicles the evolution of a citizen into a soldier and the transformation of a young man into a highly decorated combat leader. It is the story of one man and how he experienced World War II through the sites of his own gun."--container
